How to Store Your Clothing Tips from John Mahdessian of Madame Paulette

If you're like every New Yorker, you have too many clothes to fit into your tiny closet space. To learn how to store your clothing and transition your wardrobe from season to season, here are tips from John Mahdessian of high-end New York cleaner Madame Paulette.

1. Go Through Your Closets
If you're looking to transition your closets from one season to another, now is the time to evaluate your wardrobe for items that you no longer wear. Look at each piece and think about the last time you wore it. If it no longer fits on you or in your wardrobe - donate it!

There are several organizations out there that would welcome your pieces, like the Salvation Army.

2. Cleaner is Better
Make sure that each piece is thoroughly clean before packing. Particles left on items can stain and set into your clothes after several months of storage. Cleaning the clothes also means that insects will be less likely to take up residence in your sweaters and knits.

Pay attention to care labels and launder or dry clean the pieces before stashing them away. Any stains should be removed, either professionally at a dry cleaner or with a Madame Paulette Stain Removal Kit ($12.50).

3. Storage Bins
Place folded items in large plastic containers with airtight lids that can easily be stacked and stored under beds, in closets or in storage. Bed, Bath and Beyond and The Container Store have bins in all shapes and sizes.

4. Pest Control
While no pest-deterrent is guaranteed, try adding cedar, lavender or rosemary to the containers with your clothing. Moth balls tend to be too harsh for many clothing items and have a less-than-pretty smell when you open up the containers the next season.

5. To Hang or Not to Hang?
While you should hang suits and costs, never hang sweaters or other knit items that can become misshapen by long-term hanging.

If your items can't be hung, stack them in garment bags away from water and carpeting. Stack your folded items from the lightest items on top to the heaviest items on bottom. Stacking items loosely will still allow air to circulate.

6. "Clean, Cool, Dark, and Dry"
Remember Clean, Cool, Dark, and Dry. Your storage area must be all four of these in order to protect your clothing. Clean any area thoroughly before storing.

Choose a place that is not likely to be exposed to heat. A dark place will prevent fading and keep the clothing cool. Make sure the storage area is dry because wetness can attract mildew and insects.

EM: You can stop. Which clients are you not allowed to talk about?

JM: We covered this in the last issue. Confidentiality, remember?

EM: Okay. What are some of the red carpet events where your services have been needed?

JM: The Grammys, the Emmys, the Oscars, the Met Gala—if it’s a red carpet event, we’re there. We also cleaned the curtains at Radio City. And we’ve even been called in to do the Victoria’s Secret Angels Show.

EM: Really? So what was it like working with wings and underwear?

JM: Challenging. To say the least.

EM: Does certain type of lighting show stains more?

JM: Most stains are visible when the spotlight is on a performer. All stains are visible under UV lighting, including the ones you can’t see with the naked eye. That’s why we use a blacklight as part of our standard operating procedure.

EM: You’ve been on TV a bunch of times. Is that a rush, or just part of being Gotham’s greatest grime fighter?

JM: A little of both. By the way, I think you’ll be seeing a lot more of me and of the Madame Paulette crew on TV in 2012.

1. EM: You can get grease off a $5,000 suit and candle wax out of a $10,000 evening gown. How?
JM: Sorry. Our trade secrets are more heavily guarded than Fort Knox. That being said, there is nothing we can’t deal with...and no place we won’t go. In a complete freak¬out emergency, I’ll show up with my bag of tricks and take the stain out right then and there. We can use any one of ten different methods we’ve developed over the last 50 years.

2. EM: Are the stains of the rich and famous better than the stains of regular people?
JM: They may be more urgent, but I wouldn't call them better. They can be more “interesting.” We’ve actually blacklisted a few people.

3. EM: Really? Names please!
JM: Sorry. Discretion is the first rule in this business.

4. EM: What’s the oldest thing you’ve ever had to clean?
JM: Right now, we’re working on an 18th Century garment for the Museum of the City of New York. We’re documenting it as a case study so we can share our methods with other restoration people in the museum world.

5. EM: The biggest? The smallest? The most valuable?
JM: I once had to clean every inch of a 20,000 square foot mansion. The smallest thing I’ve cleaned is the stained petal of a silk flower. The most valuable? Princess Diana’s gown. I considered that priceless.

6. EM: Switch gears for a second—what the heck is Martinizing?
JM: I know it takes an hour. Beyond that, I’m not really sure what it is. I wouldn’t Martinize anything valuable.

7. EM: Okay, back to stains. I want to commit the perfect murder and fool the CSI guys. What’s your advice?
JM: I don’t have advice on committing the perfect murder. If you’re asking how to get blood out of clothing and upholstery, we can do that. You can also do it yourself, too, if you know how.

Tulips And Pansies is an event by Village Care and they raise money to help out victims with HIV and AIDS. I was a part of the event as one of the designers thanks to Avery J Fashion Consultant and was partner with Amazing Florist designer Floratech! I am happy to announce that our collaboration was so great we WON the tittle " Most Beautiful"!!! Thank you all for the great work and the Judges. Taking charge of the branding aspects for the Celebrity Apprentice Omaha Steak Challenge last week, Team A.S.A.P member Star called the best of the business to get her aprons crafted properly. I have an emergency and I need your help, Star told Madame Paulette's boutique manager Christine O'Donnell.
